Astigmatism and Presbyopia Treatment

Astigmatism and Presbyopia Treatment: Modern Solutions to Vision Problems

The visual system is highly complex and over time many people may experience different refractive errors. Some of these defects include astigmatism and presbyopia. Fortunately, modern ophthalmologic technology and treatment methods offer effective solutions to these vision problems.

What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a condition in which the surface of the eye is irregularly curved. This prevents light from focusing properly, resulting in blurred vision. There are various treatment options for the correction of astigmatism.

Astigmatism Treatment Methods:
  1. Glasses or Contact Lenses:
    • Specially designed glasses or contact lenses can be used to correct astigmatism. These lenses ensure that light is properly focused on the eye.
  2. Laser Surgery (LASIK or PRK):
    • Laser surgery methods such as LASIK or PRK can be used to correct astigmatism. In these procedures, the shape of the cornea is reshaped with a laser so that light is properly focused on the eye.
  3. Astigmatic Lens Implants:
    • Astigmatic lenses implanted into the eye through a surgical procedure can correct astigmatism by replacing the natural lens.
What is Presbyopia?

Presbyopia is a condition that occurs with age and is often referred to as “old eye”. This condition, which causes difficulty in seeing close up, is common after the age of 40.

Presbyopia Treatment Methods:
  1. Bifocal or Bifocal Glasses:
    • A traditional method used to correct presbyopia is to wear bifocal or bifocal glasses. These glasses have special lenses that correct both distance and near vision.
  2. Progressive Lens Glasses:
    • These glasses have a lens structure that provides clear vision at far, intermediate and near distances. The lens has optical powers that change from top to bottom.
  3. Multifocal Contact Lenses:
    • Multifocal contact lenses designed for presbyopia have a special design that corrects both distance and near vision.
  4. Presbyopia Surgery (Lens Exchange):
    • Presbyopia surgery, a surgical procedure, involves removing the natural lens and replacing it with a specialized multifocal lens.
Outcome

Vision problems such as astigmatism and presbyopia are successfully corrected with modern ophthalmologic treatments. However, because each individual’s eye structure and needs are different, it is important to consult with an ophthalmologist to determine the most appropriate treatment option. With advanced technology and expertise, many people can get rid of their vision problems and have clearer vision.
