What is Cataract? What are the Symptoms and Stages of Cataract? How is cataract treatment performed?

Cataract, a problem affecting eye health, is usually associated with the aging process. Cataract is a condition in which the lens of the eye loses its transparency and can lead to vision loss over time. In this article, you will learn what cataract is, its symptoms, stages and treatment methods.

What is Cataract?

A cataract is a condition in which the lens of the eye loses its transparency and becomes cloudy. The lens of the eye contributes to clear vision by allowing light to fall on the retina inside the eye. However, as cataracts develop, this lens becomes opaque, preventing light from falling on the retina and blurring vision.

Symptoms of Cataract
  1. Blurred Vision The most common symptom of cataracts is reduced visual clarity and overall blurred vision.
  2. Fading Colors: Fading or dulling of colors can be another symptom of cataracts.
  3. Sensitivity to Light: People with visual impairment may experience hypersensitivity to strong lights.
  4. Double Vision: Cataracts can cause double vision problems.
Cataract Stages
  1. First Stage (Early Cataract): Symptoms are mild and vision loss is minimal. Can be managed with glasses or lighting changes.
  2. Middle Stage (Intermediate Cataract): Symptoms increase and vision is more significantly affected. Surgical intervention may be considered.
  3. End Stage (Advanced Cataract): Vision is severely impaired, making daily activities difficult. Surgical intervention becomes necessary.
Cataract Treatment

Surgery is usually the preferred treatment for cataracts. Cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens and usually inserting an artificial lens. Modern surgical techniques make it possible to perform cataract surgeries quickly and effectively.

Prevention and Care

Although cataract prevention is not possible, you can delay the development of cataracts with healthy lifestyle habits. These include regular eye examinations, wearing sunglasses, eating a balanced diet and not smoking.

Cataracts can be an inevitable part of the aging process, but can be successfully treated with early detection and modern surgical methods. When signs of cataracts are recognized, it is important to contact an ophthalmologist.
