Pterygium Surgery: A Journey to Preserve Eye Health and Vision

Pterygium, which is among the problems affecting eye health, is a white or pink colored tissue growth, often called a “windshield”. This growth can cover the surface of the eye, affecting vision and causing discomfort. Pterygium surgery is an intervention that aims to remove this growth and protect eye health.

What is Pterygium?

Pterygium is a growth on the outer layer of the eye’s surface called the conjunctiva, usually caused by exposure to sunlight. This usually starts at the inner corner of the eye and can extend onto the cornea. Symptoms of pterygium can include redness, burning sensation and visual disturbances.

How Does Pterygium Surgery Work?
  1. Examination and Evaluation:
    • Before pterygium surgery, a detailed examination is performed by an ophthalmologist. The size, location and symptoms of the pterygium are evaluated.
  2. Anesthesia Application:
    • On the day of surgery, local anesthesia is applied to ensure patient comfort. This means that the surgical area is numbed.
  3. Pterygium Removal:
    • The eye surgeon gently removes the pterygium. This procedure involves removing the pterygium from the surface of the eye.
  4. Use of Autogenous Graft or Amniotic Membrane:
    • In some cases, an autogenous graft (the patient’s own tissue) or amniotic membrane may be used to protect the corneal surface and promote healing after removing the pterygium.
  5. Use of Sutures or Adhesives:
    • When closing the surgical site, doctors may often use sutures or special adhesives.
  6. Recovery and Follow-up:
    • After pterygium surgery, the patient’s recovery process is monitored. The ophthalmologist evaluates the patient’s eye health with regular check-ups.
Advantages of Pterygium Surgery:
  1. Reducing Visual Impairment:
    • Pterygium surgery can improve eye health by preventing the growth from affecting vision.
  2. Reducing Discomfort and Redness:
    • Surgery can reduce the discomfort and redness caused by pterygium.
  3. Aesthetic Correction:
    • Pterygium surgery can help restore the natural aesthetics of the eye.
  4. Eye Surface Protection:
    • The applied graft or amniotic membrane can accelerate healing by protecting the ocular surface.
Outcome

Pterygium surgery aims to protect the patient’s eye health by reducing the discomfort caused by the pterygium and correcting visual disturbances. However, surgical options and the recovery process may vary from individual to individual. It is important for individuals with pterygium to consult an ophthalmologist for appropriate treatment options.
